Amit Sharma, the father of Suni (Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana) and the recently identified biological father of Jai (Chris Bisson), will be introduced in tomorrow night’s episode of Emmerdale.
When Jai discovered an adoption certificate that proved Rishi (Bhasker Patel) wasn’t really his father, his entire world was upended. Rishi finally revealed to Jai that he was the result of a liaison that his mother Georgia (Lin Blakley) had with his younger brother Amit after withholding this information for several weeks.
But only a few hours later, Rishi tragically passed away at Holdgate Farm after falling down the stairs while rushing to Jai and Laurel’s wedding.
Suni, who still thinks Jai is just his cousin, will finally learn the truth about Jai’s relationship with him this week. But before he has a chance to process it, their father Amit arrives in the village.
Anil Goutam, who fans of soap operas may recall portrayed Ranveer Gulati in EastEnders last year, will play Amit.
At a recent press conference, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw discussed the character with EverySoap and other media.
Laura said, “Obviously, we recently learned that Rishi was not Jai’s biological father, and that Jai’s father is actually Amit, who is Rishi’s brother and Suni’s father. Bringing Amit in was obviously necessary because we weren’t going to leave that one unattended for very long.
“Amit is quite a dark and complex character, and even though Suni seems to want him to stick around, might Suni come to regret that decision? Is Amit keeping a new secret that could tear the family apart?
Later, Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana and Anil Goutam joined us to provide additional details regarding Amit’s introduction.
Anil told us, “I’m really happy with how it’s been written. This guy is complicated in many ways. He has a dark side, but not one he is aware of. He believes that what he does is necessary to protect his family, and I believe that he is capable of persuading himself that any action is appropriate in this situation.
He prioritizes his family, and that is what drives him. Although he will watch out for Suni, he believes that Suni’s role has been replaced by that of his sister. The person who will take over should be Suni, who ought to be the company’s right-hand man. He has not, however, desired to do any of that.
Suni wants to live his own life, to be fair,” Anil continues. “However, Amit cannot simply allow that to happen because things will then spiral out of control. Although I would describe the relationship as controlling, Amit does feel compelled to watch out for and safeguard Suni.
Amit is eager to establish a relationship with him now that it is known that he is Jai’s biological father, but how will Suni react to that?
Brahm said, “Suni and Jai have a really good relationship. “When he was younger, Jai was to him like an older brother. He feels as though he has been misled his entire life after learning that he is in fact his brother. Because Jai is the kind of businessman that Amit would have wanted as his son, I believe there is a hint of jealousy.
Anil continued, “It almost seems like Amit is trying to impress Jai. Naturally, you have to make up for the years when there was no relationship at all, but in addition, he recognizes a part of himself in Jai because of his success.
The character’s dark side is something Anil is enjoying exploring, even though we aren’t yet able to reveal what Amit’s big secret is.
It gives you a perspective on Amit that you wouldn’t necessarily have if you had just met him, he said. “I don’t think it would be very entertaining if it were just written that way; it would just be a caricature. But that’s not the case; Amit is portrayed as being complex.
