As Perri (Cantona Stewart) starts work at Summer Bay Fit this week, Tane (Ethan Browne) has high expectations for him, but things don’t go as he had hoped.
When his juvenile offenders program at the gym was formed, Tane took the adolescent under his wing, as if he took a quick liking to him above the other participants.
However, after finding out that Perri was being mistreated and abused by his father, Tane persuaded Perri to move in with him and now worries that Perri is growing too accustomed to their arrangement.

Tane worries when he can’t reach Perri the night before he’s supposed to start work. Upon arriving late that evening, Perri says he just lost track of time due to his phone dying. Tane cautions him to make sure it is fully charged in preparation for his early morning journey.
Perri goes to the surf club the following morning, but instead of heading to the gym, he goes up to Salt. When Perri tries to get a beer, Mackenzie (Emily Weir) is a little taken aback—first since it’s before work, and second because he isn’t legal.
Perri doesn’t divulge that today is actually his 18th birthday until he flashes his ID at that point.
Tane, downstairs, tells Harper (Jessica Redmayne) that he thinks Perri is beginning to act rudely toward him.

Tane is upset that Perri isn’t already working his shift at the gym as agreed upon as he walks down the stairs from Salt at that precise moment.
Perri doesn’t make things better by telling Tane that he was only buying a beer after Tane points out that he should have been at work ten minutes ago.
Mac goes downstairs as a stunned Tane repeats what he just heard in shock. Perri, with all eyes on him, feels uneasy and turns to leave.

When Mac reveals that Perri ended up getting a coffee instead, Tane wonders what in the world is going on and then feels awful because it’s Perri’s birthday.
Perri says he went to a skate park the night before in an attempt to hang out with some people his own age when Tane finds him back at home.

He had merely gone to Salt to try to have some kind of celebration because he had always imagined himself enjoying his first beer with his friends after it became legal.
Later, when Tane speaks with Harper, he remembers how his family celebrated his 18th birthday with a hangi in the customary manner.

Tane detected Perri’s Māori ancestry quickly, although he subsequently clarified that it was just on his mother’s side and that he had never studied the culture.
Tane therefore makes the decision to throw Perri a hangi, inviting the Parata whanau to attend in the hopes that Perri will want to embrace his culture.

However, it’s evident that Tane is more eager for the festivities than Perri is when cousin Kiri (David Wikaira-Paul) and the others get to work setting things up.
After giving Perri a Manaia pendant as a lucky charm, Tane goes on to discuss the significance of the hangi in their culture.
For his birthday, Perri receives an expensive watch from housemates Mac and Levi (Tristan Gorey). Although Perri is appreciative of the kind gesture, he later awkwardly reveals to an enquiring Mac that they are still practically strangers. Everyone is. Mac is fully aware of this.

Tane, on the other hand, is unable to perceive Perri’s unease at being the center of attention during the hangi celebrations, therefore the same cannot be said for him.
Perri feels overwhelmed when the whanau get out the instruments and start singing traditional tunes.
Tane eventually loses it and tells Perri that NZ is Tane’s home, not his, when he subsequently suggests getting Perri a NZ passport so they can visit their own country together.

Perri rushes off, telling Tane he can take his Manaia and declining to be his little “cultural project.”
at another scene at Summer Bay, John (Shane Withington) is disappointed to hear that Irene (Lynne McGranger) is not recovering as quickly as he had thought after slipping off the wagon.
Irene had convinced John that her drinking was a passing phase, but it was John who initially discovered her drinking and got her to go to an AA meeting.

Leah (Ada Nicodemou) and Marilyn (Emily Symons) were startled when Irene chose to quit “punishing herself” and start drinking freely with her friends instead of going back to sobriety.
Marilyn has made an effort to understand Irene’s viewpoint, but Irene views Leah’s worry as nothing more than interfering.
The following week, Leah pretends to be trying to plan a surprise for Irene when she sends Justin (James Stewart) to the Beach House to see how she’s doing. However, Irene quickly sees through this and gets into a heated argument with Leah.

John (Shane Withington) gets upset when he follows up with Irene in Salt and discovers that she is drinking wine. John had just returned from a vacation to the city to visit his son Jett (Will McDonald) and daughter-in-law Lindsey. He had noticed the growing tension between Irene and Leah at the restaurant.
Irene says she’s not drinking on her own in secret and that she’s different from everyone else she met at the AA meeting because she can now be responsible and knows when to set limits.
She even makes the spontaneous decision to host a dinner party for all of her friends to demonstrate that she can drink in public without feeling uncomfortable.

That evening, Marilyn, Leah, Justin, and John reluctantly make their way to the Beach House, where Irene pours the wine and remarks that they ought to do this more frequently.
While he is there, John declines to drink, and when Irene later finds him spying in the kitchen, she knows he is searching for secret bottles and tells him to return to the table.
As Irene keeps filling up the glasses and raises her glass to honesty and speaking the truth, everyone becomes apprehensive.

When John can take it no more, he tells Irene that she is lying to her friends and to herself. He turns away, refusing to be an enabler.
The following day, John witnesses Irene throwing several bags in a trash can close to the surf club before taking off, confirming his suspicions.
John is alarmed to discover empty whiskey bottles inside as he goes to look around.

Will he be able to persuade Irene that she needs assistance as he makes his way back to the Beach House to present her with the evidence?
The following week, following the dramatic events of the previous days, Cash (played by Nicholas Cartwright) worries about Felicity (Jacqui Purvis), who is grieving.

Cash regrets that Flick had to endure suffering even though he is aware that there is nothing he could have done to prevent it.
Eden (Stephanie Panozzo) extends an invitation to Cash to remain at the share house since Flick is avoiding Cash while she tries to handle things. Sending a message to Theo (Matt Evans) and Kirby (Angelina Thomson), Remi (Adam Rowland) requests that they bring pizza home.

Operation Cheer Up Cash starts with the beer being cracked open, and Bree (Juliet Godwin) joining the proceedings.
Later, during a conversation, Remi advises Cash that he needs to make the most of his resources and that he cannot waste time second-guessing his choices. As Remi notes, that includes having Eden watch out for him—it’s the best there is.
Cash nods, gazing thoughtfully across at Eden.
“Will you marry me?” Cash asks!
