EastEnders Icon Rudolph Walker Discusses the Challenges of Being a Black Actor

Famous EastEnders Rudolph Walker, who has been Patrick Trueman since 2001, talked candidly about the difficulties he has as a Black actor.

The eighty-five-year-old soap legend talked about his early experiences in the business on Thursday’s episode of This Morning with Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.

He informed the hosts, “I never use the word difficult; it is challenging.”

“I came to the UK with the mindset that there is an aim and I want to succeed here.” I thus met all obstacles head-on and managed to overcome them.

Ben, the presenter, discussed how Rudolph was informed that some roles weren’t suitable for “a Black actor.”

“Of course, parts were written few and far between,” Rudolph said. It had to be brought up in the episode “Black doctor, Black road sweeper, Black bus conductor” if you were a medical professional.

That was the difficulty we were dealing with, and a lot of us battled to alter it.

at conclusion, he said, “If you’re lying there sick, some of them would say, ‘I don’t want to be touched by a Black nurse,’ but the majority of them were well taken care of.” Eighty percent of the nurses at the hospital were from the Caribbean.

For more than 20 years, Rudolph has portrayed Patrick Trueman.

In order to “unlock the potential and promote the wellbeing of young people, by involving them in high-quality performing arts experiences and welcoming them into an inspiring and creative family,” the Thin Blue Line star, who will soon turn 85, established the Rudolph Walker Foundation earlier this year.

And as he stated to Metro.co.uk in 2022, he has no intention of slowing down.

“Retiring?” What is that? In response to the question of whether to leave the program, he answered, “No, I enjoy it, I enjoy being there, I enjoy working.”

“I have no doubt that after being here for a while, there will be storylines that come up.” He said at the time, “I’m sure there are exciting things in the pipeline.”
