Valentin Cassadine actor James Patrick Stuart spoke candidly with Maurice Benard about his struggles with anxiety and addiction, reaching his lowest point, and the unexpectedly simple moment that helped him change his life for the better.

General Hospital star Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) did not release a fresh episode of his State of Mind interview series over the past week. It’s possible he was busy attending the GH Graceland fan event. However, he did share a clip from a previous conversation featuring James Patrick Stuart (Valentin Cassadine).

The Interview Remains Relevant

Daytime soap fans are always interested in discovering more about the actors behind their favorite characters. During his appearance on State of Mind, Stuart opened up about his personal experiences, including his struggles with anxiety and his battle with addiction.

Maurice Benard helped James share his story in greater detail. Stuart explained how growing up around rock-and-roll culture introduced him to substance use at an early age. Eventually, things took a serious turn, and he found himself hitting rock bottom. However, he also discovered a path toward recovery through helping and serving others.

Dealing With Personal Struggles

James Patrick Stuart revealed that his father was involved in the rock-and-roll industry, meaning he grew up in an environment where alcohol and marijuana were considered normal parts of everyday life rather than warning signs.

He recalled, “My father was in rock and roll. He was part of the British invasion right, so weed and alcohol was just a given. That was just part of life, right? So when anxiety showed up, well, pot and alcohol took care of that.”

However, Stuart explained that his early experiences with substances were not simply about recreational enjoyment. They were closely connected to his growing anxiety, which frequently appeared as anger and a tendency to isolate himself during his teenage years.

What initially seemed like a positive experience, when everything felt as though the planets had aligned, gradually developed into a serious dependency.

By the time the General Hospital actor was working in New York, his carefully maintained image was beginning to fall apart. Stuart admitted, “I traded one reality for another… before you know it, you’re hanging out with guys that you just wouldn’t introduce to anybody.”

Reaching His Lowest Point

Eventually, the consequences of Stuart’s choices became impossible to ignore. His situation deteriorated to the point where finding employment became extremely difficult, while his personal relationships also began falling apart.

As he explained, people could no longer rely on him because he was “no longer a safe bet.”

His struggles had taken a significant toll on both his professional opportunities and his personal life, leaving him facing one of the most challenging periods of his journey.

He admitted, “The only person who loved me was my mom.” However, he eventually experienced one of those powerful moments of realization when he understood that his current way of living simply wasn’t working.

The Simple Act That Changed Everything

Interestingly, James Patrick Stuart’s recovery didn’t happen overnight. Instead, it began with a small and unexpected moment while he was visiting his brother’s house.

During his stay, he came across some self-help books. One day, while thinking that their advice seemed rather clinical, he glanced out of the window and noticed a rake sitting outside.

He decided to take action and told Maurice Benard, “I walked outside and I said, ‘I’m going to rake his lawn.’”

Stuart went on to explain, “Until that moment it had always been about me, my career… and I just raked his lawn and I started to feel the hole inside me at 25, 26, however old I was, start to shrink.”

That simple gesture marked the beginning of a significant change. James gradually started looking beyond his own struggles and making an effort to connect with and support other people.

By focusing on helping others, he was finally able to break through the overwhelming sense of loneliness that had consumed him for so long.

The General Hospital star reflected, “It had never even occurred to me… I want to help somebody else.”

Giving Back and Helping Others Today

During their conversation, Maurice Benard and James Patrick Stuart agreed that offering help to others can also make a meaningful difference in someone’s own mental health journey.

And it doesn’t necessarily require grand gestures or major commitments. Even the smallest acts of kindness can have a powerful impact.

Stuart also explained that addiction never truly relieved his feelings of loneliness or isolation. Instead, it made those emotions even more difficult to escape, describing the experience as living on the “dark side of the moon.”

Fans Share Their Reactions

Although the interview originally took place in 2021, General Hospital fans still appreciated the meaningful conversation and shared their thoughts in the comments.

One viewer praised both actors, writing, “What an amazing testimony! Thanks for sharing this James and Maurice.”

Another fan offered their perspective on addictive substances, commenting, “I would like to add. You know back when pot was different. Nowadays some of the pot will send you straight into an anxiety attack. I thank you both for being honest & sharing what you’ve gone through.”
