Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon has spoken out about her surprise at Bethany Platt’s unexpected pregnancy storyline, after her character discovered she was expecting a baby with her mum Sarah’s ex, Kit Green.
Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon has spoken about Bethany Platt’s pregnancy bombshell after discovering she is expecting a baby with her mum Sarah’s ex-boyfriend, Kit Green.
The actress admitted her “jaw was on the floor” when producers revealed the unexpected twist, which has left Bethany facing a difficult choice about her future. Lucy also revealed that things “aren’t going to end well” for Bethany, regardless of what she decides, given the identity of the baby’s father.
In Tuesday’s episode (October 12), Bethany took a pregnancy test following her one-night stand with Kit, and the result confirmed that she was expecting a baby. The revelation threatens to turn her life upside down, especially as she has recently begun a romance with Ryan Connor.
The pregnancy news could have serious consequences for Bethany’s relationship with her mum Sarah, who is currently serving time in prison.
Bethany has been looking after Sarah’s son Harry while his mother is behind bars, and Lucy described the pair as being “best friends”. For now, Bethany is determined to keep the pregnancy a secret.
The soap star explained: “At the moment, it’s deny, deny, deny. Telling the truth isn’t an option, especially if she wants to maintain her relationship with her mum, because her mum would have every right to never speak to either of them again.
“I mean, the entire family would feel the same way. It’s not just Sarah. So, she’s in an impossible position right now.”
Bethany now faces a difficult decision about how to handle the news and whether she wants to keep the baby.
Lucy explained: “I think she’s shocked and devastated because this isn’t a situation she wants to find herself in. Obviously, she has to decide whether to continue with the pregnancy or have a termination, which is quite traumatic in itself. So, she’s now facing a huge decision.
“I feel like she’s so overwhelmed by the shock that she can’t picture herself having this baby. However, if other people find out, their opinions and influence might change how she feels about things.”
Discussing how the pregnancy could affect her relationship with Ryan, Lucy admitted it would throw a “massive spanner in the works”.
She continued: “I think she genuinely likes him, and he genuinely likes her too. They also share some history from when they were together previously, but this is obviously going to complicate things massively.
“If she decides to go ahead with the termination, it will make things easier for their relationship.
“However, if she chooses to keep the baby, the whole situation will become much more complicated. Will Ryan still want to be with her if she’s expecting someone else’s baby when their relationship is still so new?”
