Coronation Street legend Sue Nicholls declares love for co-star and she ‘won’t have anything said’

The actress has played hair stylist and former Weatherfield mayoress Audrey Roberts since 1979

Legendary Coronation Street star Sue Nicholls spoke out about her life on the cobbles, saying she loves one of her co-stars ‘to death’. Since 1979, the actress has portrayed Audrey Roberts, a hair stylist and former Weatherfield mayoress.

Although Sue’s most well-known role is probably that of Marilyn Gates in Corrie, the actress actually made her TV debut in 1964 as a waitress in the soap opera Crossroads. Sue also enjoyed success in the music industry as a result of the show; her recording of the Crossroads theme song, “Where Will You Be?” peaked at Number 17 in the UK Singles Charts in July 1968.

Nonetheless, it’s safe to say that Sue is well-known for her portrayal of Audrey on Corrie. As the actress approaches 45 years in the part, the soap star spoke with Sharon Marshall of This Morning in a rare interview that was shown as part of the program’s new “Soap Legend” series.

“I was asked to come for a week and soon after that I was asked to come back,” Sue remarked with a smile when asked if she had intended to play Audrey for as long as she has. I’d had so much fun during the first week that there was no way I could say no thank you.”

Sue joked, maintaining her matriarchal position among the well-liked family on the cobbles, saying, “I won’t have anything said against the family!” but also disclosed the reason behind her repeated visits. “My life is now Coronation Street,” she declared. “I enjoy working with the people here, and I find coming here to be easy.” I want to keep doing what they provide me because I love it.

She also gushed, saying, “I love her to death, I love doing scenes with her,” while discussing her connection with co-star Helen Worth MBE, who plays her daughter Gail.

“When we fall out [on screen] we don’t fall out, it’s just a true family thing that happens in life but she’s [Gail’s] not a good judge of men – mind you, I [Audrey] can talk!”

After the interview on the ITV daytime show on Wednesday, March 13, hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley said, “Audrey is going nowhere!” after talking further with soap expert Sharon.

“I know as if – she’s overcome so many serial killers!” concurred Sharon. Ben went on to say: “She’s had so many remarkable moments in her incredible career.” Sue also delighted the hosts before the item concluded by reciting her iconic Miss Popoff lines from Rentaghost, a show that they all grew up loving!
