Following his wife’s Alzheimer diagnosis, the fun-loving Julie Goodyear’s husband has opened up about how painful it was to witness his wife “slowly fading away.” In connection with a recent Alzheimer’s Society campaign that includes a TV commercial narrated by British actor Colin Firth, Scott Brand has recounted his own experience with the illness.
The Long Goodbye, an advertisement, emphasizes the terrible truth of the disease’s course and how loved ones “die again, and again, and again.” The concept is supported by Brand’s own encounters.
He remarked, “I miss the fun-loving wife that Julie had always been. Her smile lit up every room, and her larger-than-life personality brightened wherever she went.” “This is all gradually disappearing now, and I’m having a terrible time seeing this decline.
Now that she is having trouble identifying people, Julie calls everyone she meets “Scott.” For me, all of these losses represent saying goodbye for the last time: not being able to go out on the spur of the moment as husband and wife, holding hands while strolling, going to meals together, and going shopping.
Goodyear played the tough landlady Bet Lynch of the Rovers Return in Coronation Street for over 25 years. The 81-year-old was well-known for her signature leopard-print outfits and glitzy appearances in movies and television, but Brand claimed dementia had made her lose interest in her appearance.
Julie has always been incredibly beautiful and has never been seen without makeup. However, the makeup and lipsticks are no longer worn, and the clothes—especially the leopard print ones—are no longer in style, he claimed.
In 2007, Goodyear wed Brand, her fourth spouse. Brand claimed that at first, he “refused to accept any support” after learning that she had dementia, but eventually realized that “I couldn’t do it by myself” after making the announcement in public last June.
“I had to quit my job to take care of Julie full-time,” he remarked. “I needed to get help because I wasn’t coping.
“Taking care of Julie is my top concern, but as a single caregiver, I felt like it was “killing me” since it was affecting my health. Julie has handled money matters her entire life, but these days she doesn’t even understand its worth.
“All of the home duties, which Julie had always completed with grace and ease, fell on me out of nowhere. It felt like I was thrust into a whole new world where I had to take care of everything on my own.
“I would encourage anyone embarking on this journey to accept assistance without delay.”
Brand stated that the Alzheimer’s Society’s dementia advisors were invaluable in assisting him in adjusting to his new circumstances, adding, “I couldn’t have managed without it.”
“I truly don’t know how I would have survived without this support; it was and still is a lifeline for both of us,” he continued. In the latest television ad for Alzheimer’s Society, a son gives the eulogy at his mother’s wake, recalling the many instances in her life when a piece of her passed away, such as the time she mispronounced his name.
“This campaign seeks to tell the unvarnished truth about the devastation caused by dementia and it is very much informed by people affected by the condition,” stated Kate Lee, chief executive officer of the Alzheimer’s Society.
“Because dementia progresses relentlessly and gradually takes away a part of the person, loved ones of those who have the disease frequently refer to it as a ‘living grief.'”However, hope remains. Through its support programs, Alzheimer’s Society is there for those impacted time and time again as they confront the somber reality of saying goodbye.
According to the NHS, dementia is the term for a collection of symptoms connected to a progressive loss of brain function.
Memory, cognitive function, and other mental capacities may be impacted by the illness. To learn more about dementia, go to alzheimers.org.uk.
