As fans had anticipated, the unidentified man observing Curtis and Portia on GENERAL HOSPITAL turned out to be his father, but there are still a lot of unanswered mysteries. The first question is, “Who plays Marshall on GH?” In the Oct. 18 episode of the soap opera, Robert Gossett made his acting debut as “Stalker.” However, after revealing his identity, the character was eventually discovered to be Marshall Thomas Ashford. Before Gossett returned, the part was briefly filled by Damien Leake in early 2022 for a few episodes.
Gossett may be recognizable to viewers from one of his many primetime roles throughout the years. He started his career in the late 1980s and has appeared as a guest on several television programs, including AMEN, QUANTUM LEAP, CHEERS, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, 7TH HEAVEN, JUDGING AMY, DRAGNET, NYPD BLUE, BONES, and ER. In addition, he has appeared in recurrent episodes of shows including The OATH, 90210, BEVERLY HILLS, DARK ANGEL, THE CLOSER, MAJOR CRIMES, and SILK STALKINGS.
GH is also not Gossett’s daytime premiere. He was a cop in the 1990s NBC soap opera SANTA BARBARA and Woody Stumper, a sleazy lawyer on PASSIONS from 2001 to 2004. He portrayed an officer on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS in 2007 and Dan Szymborski, a Newman employee, in an episode from 2020. Dan Szymborski gave Victoria advise when she assumed control of the family firm.

A mysterious man who had been listening in on Curtis Ashford and Portia Robinson for a while asked the bartender how live music was scheduled for the club. However, the man had left by the time she asked Curtis about it. Then, he approached TJ Ashford in the hospital, introducing himself as “Marshall,” and he complained of stomach ache. The patient inquired about his family while TJ examined him, and when he brought up his uncle, the patient started to cry. When Marshall was left alone for a while, he begged TJ to stay with his family before taking off. The man watched as Curtis arrived to take TJ to a movie.
Shortly before the gangster was severely assaulted and admitted to the hospital, Marshall was also spotted at the docks with Joey Novak. Liz offered to do a picture based on Portia’s description after she ran into the guy and became wary of his questioning. TJ recognized his missing patient from the drawing right away, but Curtis didn’t know the man. Then, when musicians abruptly canceled their appearance on The Savoy, the mystery man made plans with Linc to salvage the day.

The man identified himself as Marshall Thomas Ashford, Curtis’s father, when he was confronted. Marshall knew too much to believe Curtis when he said his father had passed away. Marshall, who had been chastised for abandoning him and his brother, proposed to rekindle their relationship one step at a time. He didn’t reveal the precise reason behind his death ruse and subsequent decades-long disappearance, though. Stella Henry was obviously aware of his secret during their talk, but he gave her the assurance that he would never tell Curtis so long as she knew he was still alive.
Marshall started making small talk with Epiphany Johnson. During their date, he felt pains in his chest and had to be taken to the hospital. Although he hadn’t experienced a heart attack, he needed to change medications due to a blood pressure issue. Shaken, Curtis consented to put his father’s history behind him and focus on building a future together. Curtis brought in Drew Cain, though, after Stella reacted negatively to Marshall’s allegation that he had been involved with some dangerous individuals. Together, the two men devised a scheme to uncover the truth.
Marshall accepted Drew’s offer of employment at Aurora Media’s music business, but he made it clear that there would be a background check. Marshall declined, but subsequently admitted to Curtis that he was interested in the position but was worried Drew’s probe would uncover his criminal past. He acknowledged that despite the fact that the records were sealed, he may still be found out about the non-violent offense that landed him in jail 40 years ago. Although Curtis valued his candor, he continued to worry what he was withholding from them.

Marshall eventually came to the conclusion that it would be better to leave town, but Curtis caught him in the act, telling him that he had obtained his criminal records and discovered that Marshall had been detained during a protest and taken to a mental health facility. Marshall, offended by the violation of his privacy, fled Port Charles and was last seen in Brooklyn, where TJ and Molly located him and convinced him to go back to his family’s house.
In the end, Marshall admitted that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had shunned his family out of concern for their well-being. Marshall was welcomed by all of them, and he even accompanied Curtis in establishing Trina Robinson’s innocence after she was falsely accused of a crime. Additionally, Marshall got in touch with Epiphany Johnson again and encouraged her to pursue her goal of becoming a doctor. Although Marshall was delighted to be at Curtis and Portia’s wedding, he was hesitant to perform for fear of spoiling the special day with another incident. He did, however, wind up performing at the reception when the time came.
When Marshall finally discovered that he lacked the genetic markers for schizophrenia, he was shocked. Marshall managed The Savoy for Curtis after he was shot and disabled, even stopping Selina Wu’s backroom poker games! Marshall’s late wife Irene paid him a visit in heaven around Christmas 2023, telling him to put his future goals first and to quit thinking about the past. Marshall and Stella had a private moment shortly afterward, which left them both rushing to hide and appear normal.

Marshall consented to find the physician who had given him the incorrect diagnosis all those years ago at Stella’s insistence. Unfortunately, Dr. Braddock had lately passed away, so he was unable to face him. However, Dr. Kevin Collins was aware of Dr. Braddock and told Marshall that, as a young, male, poor, angry, Black man, he was probably misdiagnosed with schizophrenia.
