This International Women’s Day we beg soaps: please do better for your women!

There’s a lot of unnecessary suffering going on!

It is the International Day of Women! Unfortunately, Walford, Weatherfield, and Emmerdale don’t seem to have gotten the day’s message, which honors women’s accomplishments and promotes equality.

The foundation of the soap operas is powerful women. They narrate tales of women. Legendary are their female characters. To be honest, most of the viewers are women, even though we all know men who enjoy a little soap opera drama.

For International Women’s Day in 2019, Emmerdale presented a special all-female episode. The episode had a “nearly entirely female” crew in addition to solely having female characters and being written, directed, and produced by women.

But how times have evolved!

Tracy’s past comes back to haunt her this International Women’s Day

Watchers of Emmerdale yesterday night seen Tracy Robinson open her new forest nursery. She was prepared for everything, had completed all of her homework, and was ready for anything.

except from Ruby.

Ruby Miligan, who is seeking retribution for her husband’s infidelity, lashes out in disappointing moments.

Alternatively, she had Caleb handle her dirty work. He defamed poor Tracy’s reputation in front of the parents who were considering sending their priceless children to Little Hoppers. She was forced to confess that she had accepted money for sex when she was in need of money because he made fun of her background as a prostitute.

Furthermore, he implied that she wasn’t suitable to care for children and put all the blame for their affair on her in a savagely misogynistic tirade.

Ruby concluded by disparaging Dawn’s history as well.

Not very good.

Rhona’s not the villain

In the meantime, back in the village, Rhona is still nursing her wounds from being portrayed as a crazy, unstable villain for *checks notes* bringing in the baby she didn’t even know about or want when her dad was unable to take care of her, feeding, warming, and entertaining the child, and then becoming irritated when the father suddenly appeared again and declared he was moving hundreds of miles away. Right away.

And then he made another attempt to con poor Rhona.

We know who the bad guy is in this situation, and it’s not Rhona!

Belle’s abuse

When used skillfully in soap operas, coercive control can draw attention to what might be an unseen kind of spousal abuse. Recall Geoff from Coronation Street and his attempt to break Yasmeen, his wife? To everyone who knew him, Geoff remained the life of the party—charming, amusing, and a true catch—but it began tiny and grew more and more dangerous.

However, we can’t help but feel that Belle’s circumstances are a little different. To begin with, Tom King lacks charm; he is ill-mannered and disagreeable to everyone, not just poor Belle. Even before the wedding certificate’s ink dried, he had already gone from 0 to 60 in terms of nastiness. Basically, he doesn’t seem to have any redeeming qualities! Belle is also not a people-pleaser. She has experienced a great deal in her short life, and she generally doesn’t hesitate to defend herself. Thought-provoking story, but is this character the right one?

Leanne Battersby

Leanne Battersby from Coronation Street is another strong female character. She has survived the death of her son Oliver, multiple unsuccessful marriages, and a drug dealer’s homicidal vengeance, and she is still alive. However, Leanne has only discussed weddings during the past few weeks, in spite of everything else. YAWN.

Kat Slater needs a win this International Women’s Day

Indeed, we comprehend. Kat from EastEnders has been through a lot. It’s true that she has been harmed by the abuse she endured as a youngster and other terrible events. However, WHY must she lose each and every time? Let’s hope that she triumphs once over her past and moves on. How pleasant would that be?

The Six

Although it was a brilliant idea to center a nearly year-long plot around the six Walford queens, the results have been, to put it mildly, unsatisfactory.

Now her wife Denise is gone receiving treatment following her breakdown, Jack Branning appears to be the more central character in the narrative. Johnny Carter has intervened on behalf of his mother, Linda, and assumed command.

And let’s not even discuss Sharon’s location…

Bianca Jackson

Do you recall how incredible Bianca Jackson used to be? witty and unafraid to share what she observed. We were all rather anticipating her homecoming, so we weren’t quite prepared for it to seem a little flat.

This week’s strange Milton Keynes episodes hardly featured Bianca at all. That was all she did, tossing the chicken nuggets in the oven. There was no information available about her whereabouts, employment status, or the reasons behind her separation from her long-term partner, Terry. What a squandered chance for a legendary figure.
