When Tane learns that Perri turns eighteen, he throws a big celebration, but it doesn’t work out well.
Tane worries that Perri is beginning to overstep the bounds with their new living and working arrangements, which is when problems begins.
When Perri arrives home late and gives no clear explanation, Tane gets irritated. The situation deteriorates when Perri is late for his subsequent gym shift and disregards the need of punctuality.
Tane’s discovery that Perri was running late because he was attempting to buy a beer for himself upstairs at Salt is the last straw.
As Tane is about to give Perri a hard time, Mackenzie Booth intervenes and clarifies that Tane was attempting to celebrate turning eighteen.
Tane questions why he hadn’t brought up his special day, realizing that he should be gentle with Perri.
Without wasting any time, Mackenzie and her boyfriend Levi Fowler give Perri an extravagant birthday present.
Mackenzie and Levi weren’t prepared for Perri’s uncomfortable response to the gesture. The teenager clarifies that although while he appreciates the couple’s kindness, he still views them as strangers.
Tane sees a chance to encourage Perri to embrace his Māori background and make him feel at home.
Tane organizes a hangi with his family to honor Perri’s special day. But it’s soon apparent that Tane is more thrilled than Perri is about the occasion.
Perri becomes more uneasy with everyone’s thoughtful attempts since he thinks he doesn’t deserve such a fuss.
Perri lashes out and accuses his mentor of treating him like a “cultural project” when Tane considers getting him a New Zealand passport so he can travel to his native country. To the surprise of all, he storms off.
Later, Perri apologizes for making a disturbance and goes looking for Tane at home. Can Tane reconcile with his inexperienced protégé?
