EastEnders fans are convinced a Walford legend is behind the mystery shooting on New Year’s Day.

EastEnders is preparing for an explosive New Year’s clash between Max Branning and a mystery gunman, with the lives of his children, Oscar and Lauren, hanging in the balance. Earlier this year, the BBC One soap aired a shocking flashforward, giving viewers a glimpse of what could happen to Max (Jake Wood) on January 1, 2027.

The womaniser was shown getting ready to marry again while spending time with an unidentified pregnant woman, before being arrested on suspicion of soliciting murder. A sinister gunman was also seen lurking in the shadows, secretly watching Max from a distance. The mystery attacker later took Oscar and Lauren hostage as the episode came to an end, forcing Max to choose which of his children would survive. But who will die?

EastEnders fans are convinced that Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) could be the mystery gunman on New Year’s Day, and there are several reasons behind their theory. In Thursday’s (October 15) episode, Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was overcome with grief following the sudden death of her daughter, Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), who died after suffering a fatal head injury.

Alfie lashed out at his distraught wife Kat for tearing their family apart as he desperately tried to hold everyone together. Kat then removed her wedding ring before storming out of The Vic.

She made her way to Epping Forest, where she was surrounded by darkness. As heavy rain poured down on her, Kat screamed out in grief for her late daughter.

Fearing that Kat might hurt herself, Alfie tracked her location using her phone and eventually found his wife collapsed in the woods. He then rushed to get her to safety.

The couple shared an emotional heart-to-heart, during which Kat apologised for her recent behaviour and suggested that love might be what she needs to help her through this difficult period.

However, Kat also made a shocking request, revealing that she wanted revenge on the man who watched Zoe die. She admitted that she wanted to see him take his final breath. The man she was referring to was Max Branning.

EastEnders fans are now convinced that Alfie could attempt to kill either Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) or her brother Oscar (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) after their father, Max, failed to help Zoe in her final moments. Max had mistakenly believed she was drunk rather than suffering from a potentially fatal head injury.

Taking to X, one fan speculated: “Maybe Alfie is the gunman in the flashforward #EastEnders.”

Another viewer wrote: “Oh my god, is Alfie the gunman? #EastEnders”, while a third asked: “Is this hinting towards Kat or Alfie holding the gun?”

One fan predicted: “Some pathetic fallacy here. Both already starting to drift in their own ways due to their grief. Is Alfie the mystery gunman?! #EastEnders”

Another viewer added: “Tbh this Kat being the gunman theory on New Year’s is kinda winning me over, either her or Alfie getting revenge on Max for Zoe #EastEnders.”
