Coronation Street viewers stunned as Kevin Kennedy makes a rare television appearance

Viewers of Good Morning Britain were left surprised when Coronation Street star Kevin Kennedy made an appearance on the programme. The actor joined the ITV soap in 1983 as Curly Watts, who was famous for his unsuccessful romantic pursuits and a series of unusual jobs.
During his time on the long-running show, Kevin was involved in several major storylines. From his love of astronomy to his complicated love life, his years in Weatherfield were full of drama.
However, his final appearance came in 2003, when he left alongside his wife Emma (Angela Lonsdale) to begin a new life in Newcastle. Since leaving the soap, Kevin has continued acting, appearing in programmes including BBC’s Doctors, Mrs Brown’s Boys and Holby City.
On Wednesday (October 14), he appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about his latest musical, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

However, viewers watching at home were left amazed, admitting they struggled to recognise the former soap star. On X, one viewer asked: “Is that our Curly.”
Another commented: “I had to look him up I didn’t recognise him.” A third added: “I thought he was Jim McDonald.” Sharing a similar reaction, another viewer wrote: “Time flies, Curly Watts.”

During his appearance on Good Morning Britain, Kevin fondly looked back on his time in Coronation Street, saying: “Oh, I mean, all of it is my favourite, actually. I’m very proud of that body of work, yeah, poor boy [Curly], he went through it!”
Kevin went on to add: “Even now when people come up and they do and they say, ‘oh, I remember when you did that’. I think that’s really humbling experience and I really love it. So it’s great.”
The actor also spoke openly about his struggle with alcoholism, revealing that he has been sober for 28 years. He said: “Well, ITV and Coronation Street, effectively saved my life, sending me into rehab.
“And I was very, very, I still am very grateful for that. You know, I was in there 4 weeks and came out slightly different.”

When asked whether his addiction had affected his work on the soap, Kevin explained: “Well, that’s the thing about addicts. They’re very resourceful, intelligent people. They have to be. This is why for the charity [Kennedy Street Foundation] that we do, we promote visual recovery.”
Sharing his advice for anyone who suspects that alcohol or drugs may be becoming a problem, Kevin said: “Well, the rule of thumb with alcohol or any drug or addiction is if it’s costing you more than money, then maybe it’s time to look at it.
“What I would say to you is, we do recover. We do recover. It’s not all doom and gloom. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of commitment, and you have to go to various health centres; there’s enough out there.”
“If you follow the advice you’re given and do what’s recommended, you can recover. I can guarantee that if you give up alcohol and drugs and follow the guidance provided, your life will improve.”
