Debbie’s health has been getting worse in recent weeks…

Coronation Street fans believe they’ve noticed a worrying clue that could hint at how Debbie Webster’s emotional exit from the soap will unfold.

Sue Devaney, who has portrayed Debbie on and off since 1984, is preparing to leave the cobbles after her character was diagnosed with young-onset vascular dementia last year.

It has already been confirmed that the much-loved character will eventually die, but viewers are now convinced that a recent scene may have provided a clue about her heartbreaking fate.

What happened when Debbie used the toaster?

Debbie’s dementia has been progressively worsening over the past few weeks. She is now not only finding it difficult to recognise some of her friends and neighbours, but is also becoming increasingly forgetful.

Earlier this week, viewers watched Debbie prepare toast for Carl’s breakfast before making a dangerous mistake by putting a metal fork into the toaster while it was switched on. Fortunately, her husband Ronnie stepped in just in time to prevent her from getting hurt. However, his attempt to protect her did not go down well with Debbie.

As Ronnie quickly removed the fork and warned her that she could have seriously injured or even killed herself, Debbie became upset, taking offence at his actions and accusing him of treating her like a child.

Eagle-eyed fans notice a worrying connection

However, viewers believe the toaster incident could be a troubling hint at what might happen to Debbie in the future.

Long-time Coronation Street fans will remember the tragic death of Lesley Kershaw, played by Judy Holt, in 2012. She electrocuted herself while attempting to clean a toaster under the kitchen tap without unplugging it first.

Like Debbie, Lesley was living with dementia, and what seemed like a simple task of making cheese on toast tragically ended in her death. Fans now suspect that the striking similarity between the two storylines is no coincidence and could be a clue to Debbie’s heartbreaking fate.

“Do we think Debbie will end up in some sort of accident and die? Like when she just nearly electrocuted herself?” one fan asked on Facebook.

Another viewer shared the same concern, writing: “It’s so sad, but I can see something like that happening.” A third fan added: “Same here. I hope not!”

When will Debbie leave Coronation Street?

As Debbie’s dementia continues to worsen week after week, many viewers have been questioning whether her departure from the soap is just around the corner. However, fans can take some comfort in knowing that Debbie is expected to remain on screen for almost another year!

Speaking to The Sun, Jonathan Howard, who plays Carl, revealed how long Sue Devaney is contracted to stay on the show, suggesting there is still some time before her exit.

He said: “Sue is contracted to August, but already they are ramping up the dementia storyline. It’s going to be very sad, so sad. I love Sue so much.

“I’m so happy she gets to play my mum, and I get to play her son.”

If Sue’s contract continues until August 2027, and Coronation Street usually films around six weeks before episodes are broadcast, Debbie could potentially remain on our screens until September or early October 2027.

For now, viewers will have to wait to discover whether their suspicions about the toaster incident turn out to be correct.

As Debbie’s condition continues to decline, it is understandable that fans are increasingly concerned about what the future holds for the much-loved character.
